If you have sensitive teeth, then you should talk to your dentist. The discomfort that sensitivity causes is not something you have to live with. There are several things that you can do at home and your dentist can do in the office to help. So don’t pass up your favorite flavor of ice cream this summer. Your dentist will work with you to help control tooth sensitivity.
What Causes Tooth Sensitivity?
Tooth sensitivity can happen if the enamel around the crowns of your teeth begins to wear thin. Enamel is a hard, protective coating that covers each tooth. Protected underneath the enamel is dentin, which is a softer and more sensitive material. Dentin contains millions of tubules, which are filled with nerve endings that relay sensation to the nerve deep within a tooth. If you have a tooth that is sensitive to foods and drinks that are hot, cold, sweet or highly acidic, then this may be a sign of thinning enamel.
Factors that can contribute to tooth sensitivity include:
- Foods and beverages that are highly acidic
- Brushing too hard or using a toothbrush with hard bristles
- Teeth grinding and clenching
- Tooth decay
- Leaky or worn fillings
Tooth sensitivity can also happen if your gums have receded. When gum tissue recedes, the root of a tooth is exposed. Normally gum tissue hides this delicate portion of your tooth. However, if you have receding gums—a common risk with advanced periodontal disease—then tooth roots are uncovered and this may cause sensitivity.
How Can Tooth Sensitivity be Treated?
There are a number of things you can do at home to help relieve your sensitive teeth. First, make sure you are brushing with a toothbrush that has only soft, rounded bristles. A toothbrush with hard bristles can scratch the enamel. Also, use either toothpaste that has a high concentration of fluoride, which strengthens tooth enamel, or toothpaste made especially for sensitive teeth. There are a number of brands sold over the counter.
Also, fluoride treatments can help make the surface of your teeth stronger. For an extremely sensitive tooth that is not responsive to fluoride toothpaste or topical fluoride treatments, cosmetic bonding may be needed to cover the area of sensitivity.
If receding gums are the reason for tooth sensitivity, then your dentist may recommend gum graft surgery to protect the roots of your teeth.
